The Saint Paul Seminary extends its congratulations to Archbishop-Designate Michael McGovern on his appointment as Archbishop of Omaha. At the same time, the community offers its prayers and best wishes to Archbishop George Lucas as he enters retirement after faithfully leading the Archdiocese of Omaha since 2009.
Fr. Joseph Taphorn, rector of The Saint Paul Seminary and a priest of the Archdiocese of Omaha, shared his gratitude for Archbishop Lucas’ years of leadership and extended a warm welcome to Archbishop-Designate McGovern, who will be installed as archbishop of Omaha on May 7 at the Saint Ceclia Cathedral.
“We are deeply grateful to Archbishop Lucas for his faithful service and pastoral leadership throughout the past 16 years,” said Taphorn, who previously worked under Lucas’ leadership in the Archdiocese of Omaha chancery. “I have seen firsthand his dedication to the people of God and his tireless commitment to forming joyful, Catholic leaders. We pray God continues to bless him in his retirement.
“At the same time, we joyfully welcome Archbishop-Designate McGovern and look forward to supporting him in forming future priests for the Archdiocese of Omaha. May God grant him wisdom and strength as he takes up this important role.”
The Saint Paul Seminary invites all members of the seminary community and beyond to join it in praying for Lucas as he enters retirement, and for McGovern as he begins his new role. May God grant them both grace strength, and peace in their continued service to the Church.
