‘That You May Proclaim His Gospel Worthily and Well’: Exercising the Grace of Preaching

As an act of communication, preaching is not a simple sharing of information. It is a privileged witness to a person, the Risen Christ. To speak about the Lord — and to speak about him well, as the liturgy prays that we do — the preacher must in concrete ways be like the Lord. The preacher must not only know and love the Savior, he must also know what the Savior knows and love what the Savior loves. As the friend of the Bridegroom—who shares life with his friend and thus knows him well—the preacher constantly confirms for the Bride the truth and love of her Spouse.

With over 40 years of combined priestly ministry, Fr. Aquinas Guilbeau, OP, and Fr. Daniel Scheidt, will share the fruits of their study and practice of preaching, with the goal of reflecting on not only the craft of preaching but also the life of the preacher, specifically the kind of priestly life necessary to sustain decades of preaching well to the People of God.

About Father Aquinas Guilbeau, O.P. and Father Daniel Scheidt

A native of Louisiana, Fr. Aquinas Guilbeau, O.P., entered the Dominican Province of St. Joseph in 2005. After several years of pastoral work in New York City, Fr. Guilbeau began doctoral studies in moral theology at the University of Fribourg, where he completed a dissertation on St. Thomas Aquinas’s doctrine of the common good. In addition to his teaching at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, DC, Fr. Guilbeau serves as senior editor of Aleteia.org (English edition). He is also the University Chaplain and Director of Campus Ministry at the Catholic University of America.

Ordained in 2001 after studies at the John Paul II Institute for the Study of Marriage and Family in Washington DC and St. John’s Seminary in Brighton, MA, Fr. Daniel Scheidt is a Priest of the Diocese of Fort-Wayne-South Bend.  In his Diocese, he has served as a high school theology instructor and director of on-going formation for newly ordained clergy.  He is currently Pastor of St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Fort Wayne, IN and is entering his eleventh year on the teaching faculty of the Institute for Priestly Formation at Creighton University in Omaha.
